Love of Country

Today, Americans celebrate their Independence and freedoms. Today should not be a day for political gain or campaigning. In fact, our founding fathers were opposed to the party system. So today, it doesn’t matter if you are a Republican, a Democrat, or associate with any other party, because today, all that matters is that we are Americans.

Think about how we as a country got to where we are today. The migrations, the wars, the sacrifices. People died for you and me; for the flag. That flag has been flying proudly from my home all weekend. It even looks good as the sun sets.

The flag is what sparks my love for my country. I love to find the flag as I travel, posted near buildings, temples, and hanging from homes and stores. Here in our city, Main Street is lined with American flags. It’s beautiful to see.

This weekend, from here forward, remember what the flag represents. The United States of America. There is too much division throughout our country, too much hate, especially during this election season. There is nothing good about contention. Question ideas, but do not fight over them. Do not ridicule others because they believe differently than you. This is a free country, remember? Those that you may disagree with are Americans, too, remember? We need to unite together.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” -Abraham Lincoln

“Behold, this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ, who hath been manifested by the things which we have written.” – Ether 2:12 (Book of Mormon)
