It’s not a regular occurance for me to have a tweet that gets a signifant amount of attention, especially during General Conference. But during the past week, one tweet in particular has had a lot of response, and I find it just as significant as its message.
During the Sunday morning session of General Conference, President Nelson issued what seemed to me a powerful prophetic warning.
Did you catch it?
He said, “In coming days it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost.”
Here is the full context:
“Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again. We will see miraculous indications that God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, preside over this Church in majesty and glory. But in coming doays, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost.”
After members of the church are baptized, during the confirmation, the person being confirmed hears the words, “receive the Holy Ghost.” For the rest of their lives, members of the church are blessed to enjoy the gift of the Holy Ghost, the opportunity to have the constant companionship of the Spirit of the Lord, should they live their lives in a way that opens their minds and hearts to its reception.
What are some things that we can do to invite the companionship of the Spirit? Simply put, we keep the commandments. We study the scriptures regularly, pray often, attend our church meetings, and serve others. These things keep us on the straight and narrow path and allow us to be directed and receive personal revelation.
Elder Claudio D. Zivic taught this weekend that the influences of the world are like a river who’s current flows stronger and faster as social media, television, etc. work to sway our way of thinking and opinions. He taught that we are in a kayak and we need to constantly paddling upstream against the forces of the world. We have to keep paddling.
For anyone who watched conference this weekend, it’s clear that the mantle of the prophet has fallen upon the shoulders of President Nelson. He spoke and taught the will of the Lord, and it is our job to listen and obey in faith.
As the influences of the world continue to become more and more powerful, we need to make sure we are putting in the extra effort to allow the spirit to direct our course on the straight and narrow path. Habits take a while to develop, so the time to start is now. As the world continues on its downward spiral, we can take confidence in our desire to follow the Light of the world.
